After more than 6 months on the road in South America our trip has come to an end and we would like to sell our car. Our car is priced low for a quick sale as we are flying to The Netherlands soon. The asking price is 3.900.000 Chilean Pesos (5800 Euro/7800 USD), which is quite a bit lower than what similar cars go for at chileautos.cl or at the many card yards we visited half a year ago. Added bonus is that this car has been maintained and comes with good tires, which is a rarity in Chile for second hand cars (more about that later).

This car has been really good for our trip. We consciously chose a smaller 4WD of brand and type that is very common in South America. There are many Suzuki Grand Nomades in South America, which makes the possible sourcing of spare parts a lot easier. Another factor was the size of the engine. Many overlanders buy cars with massive engines, which have very bad fuel consumption (and fuel is not cheap in South America!). This car has averaged 10liter/100km which is good considering it is loaded with gear and the condition of roads we have encountered. A 4WD in South America is a must in our opinion, not because you might get stuck often, but because of the higher ground clearance and the sturdier construction, especially of the suspension. Another thing we liked is how anonymous we were in this car. We have tinted the back windows black, so the gear in the back is not visible. This has meant the car has not drawn the same attention a massive 4wd with jerrycans and stickers etc would do. Compared to other travelers we have met, we have been hassled very little by (corrupt) police and in our whole trip have not had to bribe a single person, which we partly credit to the normal appearance of our car.

SERVICE HISTORY/CONDITION OF CAR
When we bought the car in December 2012 we had the car serviced by the Suzuki Dealer in Santiago.
10.000 kms later, when we reached southern Chile, we had a very thorough service done which included the following:
– 10.000 km oil change
– new oil filter
– new air filter
– new spark plugs
– new brake pads
– top up of all fluids
– general inspection
– replaced waterpump due to rattle
Again 10.000 kms later, yesterday in Arica, Chile, we have changed the oil.
Currently the car is in great condition and no foreseeable maintaince needs to be done. When we sell the car in Santiago, you won’t need to worry about a serivce for another 8000 km. What’s even better is that we have a spare oil filter and air filter in the car, so the next service should be cheap.
When we bought the car, the tires were worn, so we bought FIVE new high quality tires (at a matching high price…). The car is fitted with five Bridgestone Dueler All Terrain tires. These tires have been absolutely great. We have seen people getting stuck where we didn’t even have to go into 4WD to get through. Still, these tires are comfortable on paved roads as well, but shine on the many gravel roads you are likely to drive. We have driven about 20.000 kms with them, meaning that on average you should be able to get another 30.000 km out of them. The spare tire is still brand new.
You will not have to worry about the expensive maintance of a timing belt, as this car is chain driven. A chain is fitted for life and does not need replacing.
We have checked out many Suzuki’s before we bought this one and were quite disappointed with the quality of cars in Chile. Preventive maintenance isn’t normally done, people drive till it busts. If you buy this car, you have a gaurantee that the above maintenance has been done, as we have the receipts to show you.
PAPERWORK
All paperwork is Chilean and is officialy in my name. This means we can do a completely legal and easy transfer of ownership in your name. All you will need is a RUT (Chilean Tax Number). We can help you with applying for this after which you instantly get a temporary RUT when you visit the SII office, which is all you need.
The following paperwork comes with the car:
– Padron, this is the title which is in my name and needs to be transferred to yours by a notario
– Revision Technica, this is the annual road worthy check, valid till 31/12/2013
– Permission de Circulacion, this is a sort of road tax, paid until 31/03/2014
– Third Party Insurance, this is fixed to the car, not the driver, valid until 31/03/2013
We can give you information on full cover insurance in Chile or how to obtain insurance for other South American countries as well.
GEAR:
Last but not least, we have a lot of gear in the car. Some of this is our camping gear from home, which we will take with us, but anything else which is in the car we are happy to give to you and will set you up partly for a long trip. This is what can come with the car:
– GPS and Compressor (already mentioned above)
